Pets Home Alone: What Do They Do?

Contributed by Michelle on February 12th, 2007

I really really dislike leaving our girls home alone, but every once in a while we do it because, in reality, the girls probably enjoy having a little quiet time with no one around.  Yesterday was one of those rare occasions when we decided to step out for a bit and leave the girls home alone.  They are very well behaved when left alone so they have “the run of the house.”  Oftentimes we talk about what we think Nala, Haley and Gabby are doing when we’ve left them home alone and yesterday we decided to find out!  We spent some time setting up the video camera to record the living room.  There are piles and piles of blankets and two bed/pillow/blanket areas set up for the girls in the living room, plus we leave the TV on a music station with the volume very low.  We also thought about how the girls are always standing in the dining room windows when we get home so they can see us as soon as we turn into the court; we figured we had a 50/50 shot of capturing them in the living room and, if not, we’d try the dining room next time.  Needless to say, we picked the wrong room!  Have you ever wondered what your pets do when they’re home alone?  Have you ever thought about video taping them to see?  Have you ever done as we did and hit record?  Read on to find out what the tape revealed!

As soon as we walked out the door Haley gave one bark (I swear I understood it and she said, “They’re gone!”) and Nala and Gabby fled the living room.  Maybe they knew the video recorder was on or maybe we just got it wrong.  The tape was 1 hour long and my husband and I watched and watched and watched… Nothing!  Not a quick trip back to the living room… Not a bark… Not a growl… Not a snore… NOTHING… That is, until Haley made her way back into the living room with about 10 minutes left to go on the tape.

She got comfy on the couch in the living room and started barking; she continued to bark.  Every once in a while Gabby would let out a small yelp, but those last 10 minutes of tape were all Haley - Haley barking and barking and BARKING!!!  She would quiet down for about 15 seconds and I thought that she had finally calmed down and dozed off, but then she’d start it all over again.  As the tape came to its’ last minute there was once again silence and I can only hope that Haley got comfy and took a nap, for the sake of her sisters!

Next time we leave them home alone (IF we leave them home alone again) I’ll set the recorder up in the dining room because we believe that’s where Nala, Haley and Gabby spend most of their time.  After hearing Haley go on and on I’m not sure that I want to leave them home alone again, at least for more than 1 hour.  I think we’ll give it one more try just to see and then make a decision about leaving them home alone any more in the future!  If you have a story of your own to add about your pets being home alone, please share!
